Description | BASIC FUNCTION:
Organize and direct operations and activities involved in the maintenance and repair of school buses, trucks and other FWCS vehicles; coordinate projects, personnel and inventory to meet the vehicle maintenance needs of the District; train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program in automotive repair and four years increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Must have strong supervisory, analytical, computer, organizational, and oral and written communication skills. Incumbents must possess knowledge of methods, terminology, principles, practices, procedures, materials, requirements, processes and equipment applicable to assigned field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop, implement and inspect maintenance and repair projects for accuracy and completeness; schedule regular maintenance of District-wide buses and other assigned vehicles.
- Train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions.
- Estimate material and equipment needed for maintenance and repairs; monitor and maintain adequate inventory levels of parts, supplies and equipment; research and order items as needed.
- Supervise the inspection, troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of school bus, truck and other vehicle problems and malfunctions; assure proper repair or replacement parts and components.
- Organize and direct the maintenance and upkeep of garage facilities and grounds; establish and maintain regular program for cleaning and organizing garage and bus compound area.

Supervise and participate in the preparation of buses to meet safety requirements for school buses in the State of Indiana; oversee scheduled safety checks and inspections as required.
- Organize and direct the maintenance of brake systems; supervise transmission, motor and engine inspections, overhauls, maintenance and repairs; oversee minor and major tune-ups.
- Assure proper maintenance and repair of vehicle lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, exhaust, hydraulic, steering, electrical and cooling systems as assigned.
- Plan, organize and lay out assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, sketches, schematics, technical manuals and specifications; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders.
- Coordinate response to emergency road calls and supervise related field work.
- Dispose of and account for used tires, batteries and other salvage items of value in accordance with EPA requirements.
- Assist in the development of specifications for new buses.
- Arrange for and conduct in-service training for drivers concerning bus-related equipment and procedures.
- Share in the responsibility of monitoring security and responding to disabled vehicles during the weekend hours.
- Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

The employee will perform assigned duties which require bending, kneeling, twisting, and reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally. The employee will be required to lift, carry, push or pull moderately heavy objects weighing more than 25 pounds. Employee must be able to climb ladders and work from heights as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking at will and has limited physical labor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. |
